10 Tips from the Dietitian for Thanksgiving Day
Do you ever look in the refrigerator only to find three random ingredients that are about to spoil? A fabulous solution to this perpetual problem of mine is www.allrecipes.com. This website has an "ingredients" page where you can type in those three random ingredients, and it comes up with a fabulous recipe that I could have never imagined on my own. In addition, the recipes typically use common household ingredients not obscure, foreign foods that cost $12.95 each! I have friends who can throw a gourmet meal together with anything at the drop of a hat, but if you are more like me and need something to help you brainstorm, you will like this website. Not all recipes on the site are "dietitian approved," but you can always modify the recipe to suit your nutrition needs. Instead of giving up and choosing cereal, try this website and see if it can give you any new ideas!
Do you want something other than water, but you know soda and fruit juice have so many calories? Let me introduce you to this company called Hint, Inc. Their slogan: "DRINK WATER, NOT SUGAR." It is NOT flavored water like you normally buy at the grocery store. I personally really do not like sweet flavored water, but I love this product. It is water with a hint of something. It contains no artificial sweetener or calories. It is the essence of a flavor that permeates the water. Their flavors include cucumber, hibiscus vanilla, watermelon, blackberry, mango-grapefruit, pomegranate-tangerine, and many more! A case of 24 16oz bottles costs around $44.00. This could be a great product to offer when friends are coming over or at a business lunch instead of soda! It can be purchased online, at Whole Foods, or other grocery stores in your area. What not to order: fried macaroni and cheese. This tasty, cheesy creation is featured as an appetizer at the wonderful Cheesecake Factory. This interesting combination would be better off labeled "if you want a heart attach at an early age." Packed full of 1,528 Calories and 63 grams of fat. You would be better off taking a half of a stick of butter for only 46 grams of fat. Split with 2-4 people as the menu suggests would cut this down to a 400-750 Calorie appetizer per person, and I know you grabbed a few pieces of bread off the table as well as ordered a drink of your choice. Oh my, this dinner could quickly become enough energy to last you a few days!
The good news is that the Cheesecake Factory has the longest menu I know of with over 200 choices, so next visit to this delicious restaurant choose Chicken Pot Stickers or Edamame or Ahi Carpaccio. These delicious appetizers only weigh in around 300 calorie and are meant to be shared by 2-4 people making it a 75-150 Calorie dish. Hold off on the bread and save some calories for a bite of cheese cake!
Side note: the closest Cheesecake Factory to Winston-Salem is in Charlotte.
